This project will also organize and implement training programs for community leaders from 55 community fence maintenance organizations and develop a pilot project to establish and measure the efficacy of biological fences using Agave species.
By helping farmers to protect their crops and property, the project will be building the credibility and integrity of the conservation process in the communities whose support is essential and crucial for the long term conservation and management of the Sri Lankan elephant. A farmer who can reap the benefit of his endeavors will be more tolerant of the elephant and more willing to help towards its long term conservation therefore it is essential to develop livelihood and land use practices that are compatible to living with elephants.
IEF funding supports the purchase of electric fence equipment and salaries for field scouts, a sociologist and the project manager.
