The lack of technical guidance in translocation and re-introduction of African elephants has resulted in a number of movements of elephants which have had unforeseen or unintended consequences. The African Elephant Specialist Group (AfESG) proposes to address this issue by making available technical guidelines of “best practice” in translocation and re-introduction of African elephants. Such guidelines would address a wide variety of issues including: 1) Habitat & release site requirements, 2) Socio-economic, financial and legal factors, 3) Species, socioecology & behavior, 4) Suitability of source population, 5) Genetic status, 6) Disease transmission & veterinary requirements, 7) Capture, transport and release implementation, and 8) Post-release monitoring.
