to improve livelihoods and promote sustainable community development through the generation of income based on wildlife and environmental conservation, and to uphold the culture of the Samburu people. Because of Kalama's adjacency to the Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves, the 15,500 hectare Kalama conservation area represents a crucial migratory corridor for many important wildlife species, including the African elephant.
This project will provide continued consistent protection of elephants and other wildlife within Kalama, security to ensure that critical migration routes are available and safe for elephants and other wildlife between the National Reserves and the northern rangelands of Kenya, access for elephants and other wildlife to the Conservancy's critical resources, such as water and grasslands, development of habitat management activities in Kalama, including grassland restoration and planned grazing programs, to ensure sustainability of natural resources for the future, monitoring of wildlife and vegetation using the standardized community-based ecological monitoring system developed by NRT, and further development of awareness-raising activities within the community and schools, including support of Conservation Clubs in Kalama schools.
IEF funding supports security, ecological monitoring and community awareness activities through salaries of community officers and scouts, purchase of uniforms and field rations, and operating costs of the vehicle.
